The journal intends to provide
a forum for articles in which classical philosophical texts are interpreted
by drawing on the resources of modern formal logic. By implementing logical
analysis as an instrument of interpretation, the interpretive focus shifts
from the more common, purely exegetical approach towards a given text to
the systematic reconstruction of a theory encompassing the pertinent issues
discussed. Characteristically, such a reconstruction establishes plausible
interpretive criteria which make it possible to ascribe to the author a
systematic theory in connection with specific issues. Such a theory can
then be carefully elucidated and developed further by the means of modern
logic. In this way, novel questions can be asked of an author, which are
then pursued further within the framework of the established systematic
logical reconstruction. On the whole, this approach promises to shed new
light on classical texts, making them even more fruitful in dealing with
the controversial issues of modern philosophy.
